So you’ve got your website online, and would like to optimise it for search engines, and get more traffic? Did you know your website may not even appear in Google at all unless you give it a helping hand? These are some steps which we’d recommend taking every time you create a new website.

Let Google Know You Exist!

The most important part of getting a new website “up there” is to let Google know about it. The simplest and most efficient way to do this, is to add your website to Google’s Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools). Not only does this tell Google that your website exists and encourage it to crawl your site, it will also notify you of any potential issues, such as errors found by Google, missing (404) pages/broken links, and performance related issues.

Adding your website to Google Search Console is simple, and is covered in our blog post <here>, but the basic steps are;

  • Sign up to Google Search Console
  • Add Your Website in Search Console
  • Add the required code to your website header
  • Verify your website
  • Submit your sitemap to Webmaster Tools

Google should now crawl your site, and hopefully, as a result, index it. If any issues are found, these will be displayed in the messages section of Search Console.

Let Bing know about you too!

Whilst Google is the big player in the search engine world, Microsoft’s Bing still has a not insignificant market share when it comes to searches, with over 15% of search users opting to use Bing over the alternatives, whilst 15% may not seem like much, every potential visitor you can drive towards your website is potential revenue for you.

So, much like Google, we let Bing know through their webmaster toolbox.

  • Sign up to Bing webmaster tools
  • Add your website in Webmaster Toolbox
  • Add the required code to your website header
  • Verify your website
  • Submit your sitemap to Webmaster toolbox and allow it to crawl

Go Social

We all know social media is massive, with huge marketing potential, so why miss out? Set up your social media profiles from the off, this will make sure you don’t miss a single day of marketing potential.

So what should you do exactly?

Sign up to Facebook – When you post new content, link it from your Facebook account, and make sure you engage your audience
Sign up to Twitter – Tweet any new content you add to your website, post quality tweets with a view to getting retweets and a larger reach

If you have products to showcase, you may also like to sign up for Instagram and/or Pinterest

Once you’ve done all of the above, you’ll have built a solid foundation to increase your SEO efforts upon, with no missed potential, and no need to backtrack down the line.
